You Won’t Work It Out By Yourself

Okay, this post may hit some nerves, but to serve you fully is to serve you transparently.

A couple of weeks ago I spoke to someone who had wanted to work with me to grow their agency.

As our conversation progressed, he lost his nerve and all of a sudden said “I can work this out on my own; I’m not a moron.”

Now this is not the first time I have encountered such a response and I knew exactly where it came from.

This is a common issue that I find with many people who have been through the education system and earned a degree or some sort of a qualification.

This particular individual had an MBA and thought that he knew everything about building a business.

He had a successful career that took him all across the country and was building an agency on the side.

However, for someone with a fancy MBA he only had two clients — his dad and his brother.

He was the victim of his own ego!

The problem with being driven by ego is that when someone can actually help you, you feel that you can work this out by yourself. Because you’re intellectually superior to them right?!

The truth of the matter is you don’t know what you don’t know.

Just like you cannot learn to ride a bike from a book, you cannot build your own agency or any other business from a book.

Now you may take your MBA, apply the principles in an already established business and optimise their processes.

However, when you are starting from scratch and have never laid the foundations of a successful business, it is a totally different ball game.

The truth of the matter is, if you could work this out by yourself, then you would have done so already.

So let me ask you this… why haven’t you worked it out yet?

The biggest challenge for me in growing my business was in letting go of my ego.

Just like the gentleman I spoke to a couple of weeks ago, I also wasn’t a moron haha

I had a Law degree from what at the time was the best Law School in the country.

Top that up with regularly being the smartest person in the room and that was my Achilles heel!

The moment I let go of my ego and started to follow directions from someone who had achieved what I wanted to, I saw a remarkable shift in my income.

I can bet my house that you are not at the level you wish to be at with your agency mainly because you haven’t let go of your ego yet.

It is okay not to have all of the answers. It is okay to say I don’t know.

What is not okay is pretending that you are alright when in reality you are stuck.
